An iconic restaurant. Though in a bit of disrepair. The (who I believe are) owners are delightful characters who bring cheer and whimsy, offering stories about each dish. Their oversized hearts are evident in the ppl they employ. I have never been so inclined to leave a review for a restaurant.I wish them all the best and hope to be back soon.

I told them I was allergic to water chestnuts and they made my dish with water chestnuts. When I asked for them to make my dish again, they just picked out the water chestnuts from the first dish and brought it out again (they didn't get get all of the pieces).

Lunch buffet has a good selection for $7.99Saturday and Sunday brunch $8.99 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This was a horrible experience.. food wasn't fresh or warm.. very greasy.. washrooms were gross.. toilets didn't flush and no running water to wash your hands! Never going back!

Went for lunch with coworkers. Worst food I have ever experienced in my life. Unknown meat source with small bones and something that resembled rat balls. Ruined my work day. Not happy.

Haven't been in awhile. Food was good. No msg in anything 😊Owner was so nice and promised to let me try his special spring rolls on my next visit, made from chopped pork tenderloin not ground pork. He's very passionate about the food he serves. I'm excited. See you soon.

The Hot and sour soup is soooo delicious, also their lunch buffet is spot on with all the goodies!!!!

My wife and I are new to the area, and were looking for a Chinese restaurant near to us. My wife and I both have sensitive stomachs and often feel sick after trying new restaurants. After ordering from here for the first time we had no issues at all, and both felt fine. Of course the food was delicious as well. We decided to order again from them on Christmas Day. My brother was joining us and he has a gluten allergy. He has not always had good experiences with restaurants that claim to be gluten free, but he had no issues with any of the items they made for him. The staff was excellent and very friendly. We highly recommend this restaurant, and will definitely order again.

Extremely mediocre, very cheap though. Note that regarding the buffet there's a five dollar fee if you don't finish your meal and an extra dollar for not eating the spring rolls. The spring rolls are trash so they probably get a lot of money from that

Friendly workers, Decent food for price, great personable service. Decent atmosphere. Happy to help promote small business. Spite the past it is a nice place to go for a lunch. As every place has room to improve. This is definitely one. But with support of the community. This overall great restaurant can be much better.But as is right now. For the food and service the price cannot be beat. I highly reccomend this establishment. Will go back.

Health violations closed 2 times in 1 year.Nothing iconic about this s*** hole, the place is a dump it is never clean. The food is in question as I'm pretty sure nothing is fresh. Monday to Friday lunch buffet hot with good variety. Good price less than $10 person including dessert. Friendly hosts, hot food, enjoyable atmosphere. Happy to return.Side note: not mobility friendly, a number of steps up to restaurant main floor

The food had always been very good. The service is attentive without hovering and being annoying. I always had hot water for my tea. Plates were removed promptly while having the buffet.Speaking of the buffet, all you can eat for $8.99. There is nowhere in Winnipeg that you can get that. Tell them you are diabetic and they will give you complimentary diabetic tea. Three of us had supper for $33.97.Overall my experience at Cathay House has always been excellent.

OMG! I don't know why i keep going here. I have a very low standard for food. I go here just for my chinese food fix. If you're looking for quality then go somewhere else. If you have a hankering for szechuan ham or Cantonese broccoli stems then this the place for you.

We had dinner there this evening. Food was delicious, hot, and we left full, with enough food for lunch tomorrow. Service is friendly, and the food is wonderful, not bland or overspiced. We ordered one of the specialty dishes, with pork, peppers and mangoes, and it was amazing. We will definitely be going back.

Absolutely the best Chinese food in Winnipeg. We have been enjoying our New Year’s Day feast every year for the last 6 years. It has been the best and most consistent Chinese food we have ever had. And yes our group has said the same thing. I will guarantee you will not leave disappointed. I will also suggest to speak with the owner about special requests. He has some recipes up his sleeve that will astound you!

I'm sorry to say but my last experience at Cathay house a disaster to say the least the food was cold I'm sure most of it was reheated from God knows when chicken was dried out eggroles were like a wet rag...salad....😖didn't go there...an I like my salad. Im Not gonna be back folks. And the restrooms.....? Dont go there, please.

The food is mad terrible , it got my gf and I sick to our stomach. The food is re heated . Awful place to eat at . We also seen rats around the corners of it's walls

Went here for the lunch buffet. The place was completely empty. The lunch was absolutely terrible, worst food I have ever been served. It was like they left it in the buffet table all night, then tried to reheat it. It was still cold and completely covered up. It was old and inedible. The noodles were mushy, the chicken was hard and dried out. We ran out of there and left our food on the table and didn't pay. Obviously didn't eat anything. This has to have been thee worst restaurant experience I've ever had. They should close down if this is the food they are serving because they can't afford to have fresh. I'd give negative stars if I could.

I decided to go out for a nice chinese dinner, after looking around at buffets we found that this one was only 8.99$.. I couldn't believe it, there must be a catch I thought. Now I decided to give it a chance since I don't like to judge a book by its cover. So we arrive at the front door and are immediately greeted by a rat in a waiters uniform who promptly leads us to our table. As we sit down a snake slithers up to our table and tells us his name is Joe, he asks us what we want and we tell him just the buffet and some water. So I walk up to the buffet line and to my surprise the food is just how I like it, old, dry and reheated. since the food is such exquisite quality I accidently took to much and got charged a extra 5$ but I really don't mind because the place reminded so much of the dumpster I live in that it was worth it, And you know what the best part is? You have the place all to yourself 95% of the time because its so empty, I really don't understand why

Used to be a great place. It's gone downhill to the point it's not even on the hill anymore. Beware the debit card scam. The girls punch in the amount of your bill wrong and after you pay tell you they entered the wrong amount. Then fix it and make you pay the balance. This way they can charge you the debit fee twice. Better off going to Royal Fork behind them.

Absolutely AMAZING food! Incredible service, very attentive and friendly! We will be going back again, they provided an evening that we won't soon forget.

This place has an impressive variety of food-bourne illnesses to choose from: dysentery, typhus, colitis, influenza among them. I got the dysentery and was not disappointed!

Very inexpensive buffet restaurant. Limited selection of food but they always have the basics. For an all you can eat buffet lunch under $10.00 can't be beat.

Very sketchy place. The outside of the restaurant like it's been abandoned for years, the place is dirty, the lighting is almost non existent, the decor is severely outdated, and it's absolutely shocking that this place is still standing, nevermind still open, due to the many health code violations! I, as well, 'worked' at Cathay House and it was the worst experience of my life! The trainer was nice, but everyone else was horrible! A lot of yelling and screaming and they pretty much took complete advantage of me and used me for free work.If I could, I would rate this filth trap -113 stars! Don't waste your money here.

It is surprising how quiet and empty this place is during lunch buffet. The buffet offers a great selection of good food at very reasonable prices.b

Ate here with a group of 7 people a few hours before they closed. It was a quiet and relaxing place and the owner was accommodating and kind. The food came out very quickly and the quality was high. We all shared our orders as the owner suggested and got to try a large portion of the menu. The food tasted fresh and tasted as was made with actual ingredients and not artificial flavors. Definitely be coming back and ordering from here in the future.

Used to be one of the best restaurants in the 80's but has gone downhill with the new owners.

Scary AF!I didn’t actually eat here, I walked in the door wait 5 minutes in an empty restaurant and was then sat down. When I asked the “server” how much the buffet was I was told “I don’t know”, I proceeded to ask for the real server and was told “hi” English was not the barrier here.... because when I decided to look at the buffet before eating it I decided to get my young nephew and leave.... this is when his English kicked in and started saying “why are you leaving?, what’s wrong?” And literally followed us from the back of the restaurant out to the parking lot. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE!

I really liked their chicken, and a few other dishes, they need more customers to keep the buffets fresher
